When "Life" Shows Up - Give Up or Learn?

You might be wondering what happened to Weekend Wednesday #4 and the weekend project.

Well, "life" showed up in the form of a new project with a new client. While thrilled for the opportunity, I let it be a distraction keeping me from my commitment to the Weekend Wednesday 2017 program.

Give Up?
Now, I can sit here and justify it or beat myself up about it or just plain give up on the new project and the Weekend Wednesday 2017 program.

OR.....

Assess
I can use this as a learning opportunity and assess how to proceed.

Review Goals & Priorities
First, I paused and took a look at the big picture of my goals, priorities and current projects and activities. Fortunately, Weekend Wednesday and the new project both fit the big picture.

Maintain Quality?
Second, I assessed my schedule to determine if I had to time to see if I could maintain the new project work at top quality as well as keep up the quality of the Weekend Wednesday program. Happily, there is room.

Done Is Better Than Perfect
Third, I remembered the wise words I read in Sheryl Sandburg's book, Lean In, "Done is better than perfect." I then crossed out the 1/28 Weekend Wednesday project on the overall 2017 projects list and will move foward with the program.

Go Foward Plan
Finally, I created a game plan that is doable going forward that includes some wiggle room for future "life" instances showing up. Yes, I know that one can't plan for everything but one can be ready for some things.

Weekend Wednesday #3 - another office drawer with step-by-step pictures

Week #3 - Another Office Drawer - With Step by Step Pictures

We are still in the office this week taking care of our drawers.

Below is my office drawer journey. Play along with your own desk drawer.

STEP 1 - Take a before picture (if you dare)

Here is my before picture of my actual desk drawer at work.

Step 2 - Pull everything out of the drawer and group like with like.

Everything was in that little drawer.
Step 3 - Review and make decisions: keep, trash, move.
Everything categorized: trash, move, keep.

TRASH: Old receipts, small paperclips (which I HATE),
old pens and old "thank you" notes (will buy new ones).
MOVE: I'm paperless so I didn't need the binder clips or letter opener. They got moved to the central office supply center on our floor. I gave the book to a colleague. The microphone got placed with the rest of the AV equipment.
KEEP: Ensured I only had items that
were working/useful and needed.
SUB-SORTING: I even "sub-sorted" my push pins.
I only kept a small subset of my favorite color.
Again, I'm paperless so only a few push-pins are needed.

Step 4 - Replace the "keeps" into drawer, like with like.

We all have too many emails. Most of the time, it is just easier to quickly click delete than to take the steps to unsubscribe.

Every Sunday, I will post here, in the blog, as well as on Instagram (@Jaxtastic), Twitter (@JaxLBC) and Facebook (Jaxtasic Life) to remind you to:

  1. Select two (2) emails that you want to stop receiving.
  2. Click the unsubscribe link in the emails.
  3. Enjoy a smaller inbox.
Eating the email inbox "elephant" one bite at a time.

UPDATE (1/8/17, 1:55pm) - Facebook follower, Regina, shared a great resource called Unrollme.com where you can unsubscribe from multiple email addresses at once.

New Year's Resolution...New Year's Smeshaloution

Every year we do it. On January 1st, we create new year's resolutions and let them die a slow death over the next few months. Let's take a look at what you can do to create a great 2017.

Non-Resolutions
More and more, people are releasing themselves from the "vicious cycle" of new year's resolutions:
3 and 1
Take a look at your 2016. What three things were great? Do you want to continue doing them in 2017? What one thing didn't go so well and what lesson have you learned that you can take into 2017?

This is YOUR year. Make it YOUR version of great.
